On Tuesday this week, Governor Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, signed a bill to decriminalize the possession of cannabis. The bill removes the criminal penalties for possession of less than three quarters of marijuana or up to five grams of hash.
This now adds New Hampshire to the list of states who have already decriminalized the possession of weed. Marijuana majority founder, Tom Angell, stated on twitter:
With the law’s passage, all of New England has now decriminalized cannabis
The new law does not go into effect for another 60 days. Supports state that this change will ensure that young adults will not ruin their lives by getting caught with weed possession. The new law also states that police officers cannot arrest someone for a cannabis violation.
Instead of criminal penalties, cannabis possession is now only a violation-level offense with fines up to $300 for adults over the age of 21. Minors who are caught with cannabis will be subject to a delinquency petition. If they are caught with marijuana four times or more within a three-year period, they could be charged with a misdemeanor.
